You have just crossed over Sawmill River, which is flowing from Sullivans Pond to the Harbour. This is also the location of the Portland Street Bridge.
In the past, people living to the east of the bridge were known as “Up-Alongs” and those to the West were known as the “Down-Alongs”.
There were, at times, fierce rivalries between the young people in these two groups.
